Learn about CleanMail Plus

CleanMail's specially-developed filtering rules enable you to customize the level of filtering for your entire domain or for each individual E-mail account on your domain. When you set a filter rule for your domain, it is applied to all of your users' email accounts automatically. You can, however, change the settings for selected users as necessary. For more information on the predefined rules, see the CleanMail Plus Filtering Rules section below.

You can also create your own blacklists and whitelists. A blacklist enables you to specify email addresses from which all incoming E-mail messages are automatically blocked. A whitelist enables you to specify the E-mail addresses from which E-mail messages should never be blocked. You can specify a full E-mail address, such as myemail@mydomain.com, or a partial address that begins with the @ symbol, such as @mydomain.com. Remember that E-mails blocked by the blacklist cannot be retrieved. You can create a blacklist and whitelist for your entire domain and can add additional blacklist and whitelist entries for the individual E-mail accounts on your domain.

To upgrade to CleanMail Plus:

1

CleanMail Plus offers greater control and flexibility in managing spam and virus protection, including spam learning capabilities.  To start, click Email in the main navigation menu of SiteControl.

2

Under the CleanMail section, click Upgrade to CleanMail Plus.  You will then see the confirmation page.

To configure CleanMail Plus Black/White List:

1

Click Email in the main navigation menu of SiteControl.  (Assuming you have already upgraded to CleanMail Plus).

2

Click Manage CleanMail Plus.  You will then see the configuration page.

3

To create a blacklist and whitelist, click Black/White List.

4

On the Black/White List page, enter the partial (@mysampledomain) or full (myname@mysampledomain.com) email address to add to the black or white list and then click Add.

5

Repeat Step 4 for each address you want to add to the Black or White list. When you are finished, click Done.

To configure CleanMail Plus:

1

Click Email in the main navigation menu of SiteControl.  (Assuming you have already upgraded to CleanMail Plus).

2

Click Manage CleanMail Plus.  You will then see the configuration page.

3

Choose between domain- or user-level settings. For the former, select the top set of drop-down menus (under the Manage Domain section) and click Apply. Note that individual users can modify their respective settings in SiteMail. The administrator can manage the settings of every user in SiteControl.

4

Select filter level.  (See Filtering Rules below for more information). By default it is set to Moderate.

5

Select SPAM Action.  Once an E-mail is identified as spam, you can choose to either tag it as spam in the subject line of the E-mail (and still have it delivered to your Inbox) or automatically move it to the SPAM folder in SiteMail.  E-mails in the SPAM folder will be saved for a period of seven days (and will count toward your E-mail quota), but will be automatically deleted thereafter. By default it is set to Tag Subject.

6

Select Attachment Rule.  Given any attachment in an email, select the best rule for your needs.  If you regularly receive legitimate E-mails with attachments, then select either "Allow All" or "Deny Executables" (generally, executable attachments are viruses and should not be opened - even from known senders.) By default it is set to Allow All.

7

Select type of Virus Scan Action.  You can choose to automatically delete E-mails with viruses or move them to the SPAM folder for inspection. We do not recommend disabling the virus scan unless you are already employing other means for virus protection. By default it is set to Delete Automatically.

8

Select Spam Learning option.  Spam Learning is a highly intelligent mechanism by which CleanMail Plus learns and optimizes its protection abilities in accordance with your specific spam traffic. In particular, it analyzes not only the E-mail address (just like the Black/White List) but also the subject line and message content making it much more powerful. Once enabled, you will notice two new folders in SiteMail: "Learn-Spam" and "Learn-NotSpam". By default it is set to Enable.

  • Learn-Spam. This is the folder (under My Folders)  to which you would move any received email that you deem to be spam and/or undesirable. Every 12 hours, CleanMail Plus will analyze all emails in this folder and learn to recognize future emails with the same or similar characteristics as spam (and therefore not receivable). Please do allow a few attempts to learn properly.

  • Learn-NotSpam. This is the folder (under My Folders) to which you would move any email falsely identified as spam. Once learned (every 12 hours), CleanMail Plus will never again identify such emails as spam. Please do allow a few attempts to learn properly.

9

Once you are satisfied with the selections, click Apply next to each individual E-mail address or domain-wide.
