Can I have Web hosting without a domain name?
No, a domain name is required. However, Optimum Online Web Hosting customers will be provided a domain name (yourdomain.com) for free for as long as you are a Optimum Online Webhosting Customer." (or something to that effect).
Optimum Online Web Hosting customers who already have a domain name can transfer it to Optimum Online Web hosting in lieu of registering a new domain.
An IP address is literally the physical location of a computer on a network, whether that network is your home network or the entire Internet. Such a location, like any home, has a distinct address. The Internet sending data according to IP address is analogous to the postal system sending mail according to home address.
The location is represented by four sets of digits, for example, 64.192.3.43. When you visit optonline.net on a browser, you are actually visiting the IP address of optonline.net. But instead of having remember the IP address of your favorite Web site, we use the domain name that is pre-configured to automatically map to its corresponding IP address.
Does it matter which operating system is used in my computer?
No, the operating system used in your computer is completely independent of your Web hosting service. Your Web hosting server use its own operating system so it does not matter what you or your visitors use.
Currently, we offer three server platforms: Linux (the default), Windows Server 2003, and ColdFusion.
Optimum Online Web Hosting customers will begin on the Linux platform, but they may upgrade and switch to either Windows or ColdFusion at any time.
Do I need any special software?
With the exception of a browser, no special software is required as we will provide you the necessary tools to create Web sites and read E-mails (and more). You are, of course, free to use your own tools when possible.
